Choosing a puppy

We often get asked which puppy is best in the litter and this is a difficult question to answer.

Obviously having reared the litter we can see the personalities start to develop and see the behaviour displayed by each individual. All puppies are different, some are outgoing, whilst some are quiet.  From about 6 weeks of age it is usually easy to see the dominant pups.

When selecting a puppy it really comes down to what you want the puppy for.
A show puppy needs to be outgoing and enjoy people.
A working dog is better to be a natural hunter and confident.
A pet needs to be loving and able to take whatever family life throws at him.

Each Devonelite litter is raised with total commitment to producing confident, outgoing and  happy puppies. All puppies are raised in the home, well socialised and given plenty of opportunately to develop physically, mentally, emotionally and socially.

We always have pick of the litter for ourselves. We are looking for a dog who can win in the show ring but who will also be able to work in the field. This means the dog must have excellent conformation (so as to compete in the show ring) but not so heavy he cannot do a days work. He must be bright, outgoing and biddable.

This does not mean the other puppies are not any good, just that we get to pick ours first. At 8 weeks it is difficult to tell which one is best anyway and sometimes when people bring back their pup to show us or for holidays, we are left thinking why did we let that one go!

Whichever puppy you choose, we will have done our very best to produce a labrador who fits the breed standard, has an excellent temperment and is a healthy specimen. When we breed we breed for the whole labrador and always keep in mind that 90% of each litter will go to pet homes and so must be suitable for that purpose. I want all my puppies to have a wonderful life not just the one who can get placed 1st in the ring.

Good luck in your search for your new best friend.
